### Carla's Proportion Post

Part 1 - Definition

Ratio - the relation between two similar magnitudes with respect to the number of times the first contains the second.

Rate - Rate is a ratio that compares two quantities of different units.

Proportion - two sets of numbers are proportional if one set is a constant times the other.

Part 2 - Proportion Statements

1. 5 hours to travel 360 kilometers is about 72km/h.

2. Emma saves 28 cents of every dollar that she earns.  Emma earned \$75 last week.  How much money did Emma save last week?

3. What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?

• 1). Does this seem fair?
• No
• 2). With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above.  Does it seem just and fair?
• No it didn't seem fair because the man who wasn't homeless stole over  \$3 000 000 000 dollars but he only got sentenced for only 40 months. When the homeless man stole \$100 dollars and he gave it back. But the homeless man got sentenced for 15 years.
• 3). Why have you made this choice?
• Because it isn't fair to the homeless guy.
• 4). What would you have done if you were the judge
• If I were the judge I would've let only the homeless man to jail for about 2-3 months because he gave the money back to the owner. The other guy stole a lot more money than the homeless man so I would have sentenced the man who isn't homeless for 15 months in prison.
